OCI acquires Tokuyama’s Malaysian polysilicon production with capacity of 20,000 MT

OCI will acquire 100% stake of Tokuyama’s Malaysian polysilicon production with annual capacity of 20,000 MT to reinforce its market leadership in global polysilicon industry.

On Apr. 26, OCI Company, a global solar PV business leader, announced that its BOD decided to conclude a contract to acquire 100% stake of Tokuyama’s Malaysian subsidiary for polysilicon, named Tokuyama Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. and located in Samalaju Industrial Park Sarawak, Malaysia.

In Oct. 2016, OCI acquired 50,000,000 shares of Tokuyama Malaysia at 24MUSD. On 26th of April 2017, the company acquired 100% stake after completing the technical review and obtaining approval from the related authorities.

With annual capacity of 20,000 MT, Tokuyama Malaysia was established in August 2009 for solar-grade and semiconductor- grade polysilicon manufacturing. Since then Tokuyama Malaysia has suffered from market price fluctuation.

However, this plant enjoys competitive hydropower cost of Sarawak. In addition, since plant is also located in tariff-free site, it will be able to avoid trading issues. OCI is expected to bring operational improvements of the plant’s Siemens-based technology in which OCI has accumulated cutting edge knowhow.

In addition to its annual capacity of 52,000 ton in Gun-san plant, OCI will increase its capacity up to more than 72,000 ton through this acquisition.
